The room was not hidden.  From the bottom of the stairs, the full sized door is juat at the end of the hall.  The wooden latch at the top is visible in this picture.

The Ramseys stored artificial Christmas trees in that room.  The housekeeper and her family had been in there more than once.

The door is open in this photo and it is clear both dooorknobs are intact (despite what Paula Woodward reported in her book).
