Joe and Betty Barnhill - East
#6
Damon Barnhill
SEPTEMBER 9, 1973 – MAY 8, 2019
Obituary of Damon Barnhill
IN THE CARE OF
Olinger Funeral, Cremation & Cemetery - Highland
“I’m home. Home sweet home.”
Damon Barnhill went home to be with the Lord Wednesday, May 8, 2019 in Broomfield, Colorado. His celebration of life service will be on Thursday, May 16, 2019, 4:00 p.m. at Faith Bible Chapel’s east auditorium, 6210 Ward Road, Arvada, Colorado. The doors will open at 3:15. A reception will follow the service in the east gym.

Damon was born in Denver on September 9, 1973. He lived in Commerce City, Arvada, and Broomfield during his 45 years on this earth. He is survived by his wife, Katie, his two daughters Dakota and Dillan, his stepsons Joshua Bustos and Cody Escoubas, his cousins Lynette Hays and Troy King. Damon’s adopted family are his Dad and Mom, John and Janet Koppenhaffer, brothers Matthew Koppenhaffer (Amber) and Bub Koppenhaffer (Anna). He is loved deeply and will be profoundly missed by his in-law parents Chuck and Vicki Bustos, his brother and sister in law, Ryan and Renee Bustos, his nephews Joey and Brady, his grandparents, nephews, nieces, aunts, uncles, cousins, multiple friends, colleagues, and his four-legged family: Spanky, Reggie, Finnegan, Chloe, and Maverick. Damon is preceded in death by his beloved grandparents, Joe and Betty Barnhill and his cousin Charlene Sparks.

Damon and Katie were married in Westminster, Colorado in an intimate ceremony on January 27, 2008. They had been high school sweethearts and then rediscovered each other again in the latter 2000’s. They reaffirmed their wedding vows on a beach in Playa Del Carmen, Mexico on May 16, 2008 and moved into their current residence on May 16, 2010.

Katie has often said that Damon did everything at 150%. He loved all things outdoors – hunting, camping, boating, fishing, grilling, hiking – and he taught many of us how to navigate and truly enjoy the outdoor life. Damon was a mentor who was loved and admired, a manager in his field of commercial roofing and construction for more than 25 years. No matter what it was, he never hesitated to teach it if he knew it … to share it if he had it … to give it if he possessed it. Damon was a leader who excelled in his career path and yet did not hesitate to serve quietly and faithfully behind the scenes in various areas of ministry.

He loved family time, changing the oil in vehicles with his sons, woodworking, sports, reading, playing pool, learning from documentaries, country music, frying the Thanksgiving turkey and masterfully carving it, playing Taylor Swift’s songs for his girls (he knew all the lyrics), traveling, breakfast with his best friends, dancing the country cha cha, his garage, and the Gospel preaching of Steven Furtik and Jason King. He tolerated Phase 10 and was quite good at Hand and Foot. He loved his wife, his daughters and sons, his family, and his friends and there wasn’t anything he would not do for them if he could. And Damon loved Jesus. “Greater love has no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.” John 15:13. Damon’s name means “to tame,” “loyalty,” “friend.”

This is only a temporary goodbye, our beloved Damon. Although what has been is now past, you await us in our forever future. You are “home sweet home” and your life and home-going inspires us to be in awe of God’s amazing grace and incredible creation, to be warriors, to love each other well, and to “stay humble and kind.” Yes, we are leaning on God and are going to be ok because we know you are.

Fond memories of Damon and expressions of sympathy for his family may be shared at the guest book below.
